Populations, Variety and Selection: Verifying Complex Designs - PDF

Ken Albin, Verification Methodologist

Abstract:
Design complexity is increasing, time to market is shrinking, compute resources and staffing stay the same (if you are lucky!). This talk shows how ideas from complexity research can provide practical guidance for verifying complex designs today and tomorrow.
This presentation will be followed by a technical panel discussion with audience Q&A

Panelists:
(1) Micah McDaniel - Principal MTS at ARM
  • Currently verification lead for application class processors at ARM in Austin.
  • Joined ARM is 2002 as an RTL design engineer. After writing RTL for 2 years, moved to verification.
  • Worked at Chicory Systems (an Austin startup designing hardware-based java accelerator) from 2000-2002. Wrote RTL, designed and debugged fpga platform.
  • Worked at IBM from 1997-2000 as a circuit designer.
  • Graduated in 1997 from UT Austin with MSEE.
(2) Greg Smith - Sr. Verification Manager at Oracle
  • Greg Smith has over 25 years of experience in the design of processors, ASICs and full systems.
  • Greg Smith is currently a Senior Manager of Design Verification for SPARC cores at Oracle - a position he has held for 5 years.
  • Prior to Oracle, Greg managed the design and verification of fault tolerant ASIC designs for Tandem Computers. It was at Tandem/HP that Greg developed a passion for metrics as a tool for determining design quality and completion which lead to the tape out of a dozen ASICs each of which had first pass success.
  • Prior to Tandem Greg was managing the development of a VLIW mini-supercomputer system at a
company called MultiFlow in New Haven, Connecticut.
  • Greg started his career designing minicomputer systems at Prime Computer in Natick, Mass.
  • Greg holds a BSCS from Ohio Sate and bleeds scarlet and gray.
(3) Jim Greene - Senior Manager at AMD.
  • Jim has worked as a verification manager for AMD for past 5.5 years, where he is currently organizing the team for the company's next processor core. While at AMD, he has led the Bobcat core team from post-silicon to production. Jim also led the verification teams for first AMD fusion SOC, the Bobcat core (a low power x86  micro architecture), and several NorthBridge verification teams on the Griffin core project.
  • Prior to AMD, Jim worked in a number of Austin startups including LayerN/Britestream  - a networking company, Agere – a networking company and successful startup (became Lucent  which became Agere Systems), and CAE Plus - a small EDA company.
